CPI-Mafioso loudmouth and Don Karat’s better half Brinda Karat appeared on Karan Thapar’s Devil’s Advocate and reminded us once again what ugliness lies beneath that fair skin. To refresh everyone’s memory it was Brinda Karat who in the run up to the state sponsored civil war on Nandigram had called for a dose of “Dum Dum Dawai” or mob lynching. When asked about the rape of one victim in Nandigram by CPM cadres, she talked about some stringent actions against the culprits. By stringest action, she was not referring to the rapists but to the doctor who examined the victim.
Events in Nandigram and Kolkata over the past year (and especially the last fortnight) reveal much about conflicting conceptions about the rule of law and governance in contemporary India. The ruling CPM party in West Bengal clearly believes that Nandigram is an issue over which it has the final say, and upon which other institutions of governance have no standing to comment. In recent days, the CPM was reported to have asked Parliament to stay away from the issue because it is a ’state subject’. CPM considers Nandigram its own property. Its party cadres have taken control of the land by forcing the villagers to toe their line. Common man’s lands would remain with the CPM and they would hand those over to the industries that are planning to establish SEZs here. What an irony! The Left parties always talked about people’s rights. Now they are snatching them by force.
This is outright hypocrisy and fascism, Mrs Karat.
I quote from a Barkha Dutt article in Hindustan Times which recently appeared. Here are extracts from Dutt’s piece:
“This time the violence has unfolded behind a veil of intrigue and secrecy. Unlike in March, when an entire country watched horrified as police guns pummelled unarmed villagers with bullets and bulldozed their way through Nandigram, this week Marxist foot soldiers made sure that blockades and threats and the stealth of the night would keep them protected from public gaze. But, as horror stories managed to break through the shroud of silence — bone chilling stories of rape, plunder and murder — the West Bengal Chief Minister gave away the game himself. With the transparent aggression that marks a man with a guilty conscience, he flared up in rare anger and told journalists that the protestors in Nandigram been “paid back in their own coin.”
Background: The Nandigram SEZ controversy, which caused the Nandigram massacre, started when the West Bengal government decided that the Salim Group of Indonesia would set up a chemical hub under the SEZ policy at Nandigram, a rural area in the district of Purba Medinipur. The villagers took over the administration of the area and all the roads to the villages were cut off. The administration was directed to break the Bhumi Ucched Protirodh Commitee’s (BUPC) resistance at Nandigram and a massive operation with at least 3,000 policemen was launched on March 14, 2007. However, prior information of the impending action had leaked out to the BUPC who amassed a crowd of roughly 2,000 villagers at the entry points into Nandigram with women and children forming the front ranks. In the resulting mayhem, at least 14 people were killed.

Industrialisation versus livelihood is a subject of intense debate. In a democracy, such debates should be sorted out by persuasion. If the Government thinks an SEZ in Nandigram is in the larger interest of the State, it should convince the protesters to see reason. The use of force will send the wrong message. The police over-reacted by opening fire and killing persons who were no doubt indulging in stone throwing and other violent activities. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee should defuse the explosive situation that is showing signs of going out of control. The major problem in this incidence is total failure of police network and police support for the ruling party activists. At present large number of Nandigram residents are forced to live in camps. Trinamool Congress and ruling communist parties are blaming each other for this problem, however, the biggest reality is the painful condition of the people in Nandigram, who are victimized inside their own country by their own government.
The CPI-M today is perhaps the most lethal of mafia outfits which wants to usurp power unchallenged. It is today more lethal than its foreign inspiration, the Chinese Communist Party, which atleast is honest and transparent in its intolerance of political opposition.
Democracy and human rights are nowhere visible at Nandigram. The media is not allowed, opposition leaders heckled and the police is staying away. This is the situation in a part of the world’s largest democracy. Human right activists have compared the violence in Nandigram to Gujarat riots.
- Is Nandigram 2007 like Gujarat 2002? Such comparisons deceive. Every crime is horrifying in its own way. Yet there is something outrageous about the way in which the CPM is trying to evade acknowledgement of the enormity of the wrong committed in Nandigram.
- Computing the exact degrees of separation that lie between Nandigram and the communal carnage in Modi’s Gujarat five years ago is a tawdry exercise, best left to those who have the stomach for it. [Indian Express Editorial titled “Nandigram’s spectre”]
As one of our fellow blogger offstumped says:
If the BJP’s Narendra Modi who responds to riots within 48hours is called a “Modern Day Nero”. what title will the sanctimonious conscience keepers confer on this Chief Minister of Bengal who has slept over the complete breakdown of government and constitution in Nandigram ?
If spontaneous riots and mob hysteria in Gujarat are termed a holocaust by lame duck Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, why is he at a loss for words to describe the pre-meditated acts of war in Nanidgram that have been waged with the active connivance of the Police and the CPI-M ?
The one who were pointing guns at culprits of Gujarat violence now find themselves in the “same nappy.” The so called “communal forces” are now targeting the “secular forces” in country for the complete silence on this issue, though majority of sufferers are minorities. It seems that the vote doesn’t matter here or for some strange reasons that Congress has refrained from answering questions on Nandigram.
The Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been taking you for a ride with sweet talk of minorytism. The next time the Congress brings up the Sachar report and the Prime Minister talks about equity for Muslims as reasons to seek your vote, remind them of that one word that never crossed their lips – Nandigram !

27 of the ppl killed were workers of CPI-m……………….and what will u like to say bout maoist present in the area….infact maoist have come out openly saying that they r involved ……..i will also like to ask “fellow
blogger” that did modi respond in 48 hours ………..i think he did it before that………to make sure that riots continue for month nd army was called in very late…in fact pratically never used……….on other part army was called within 2hours in calcutta………..as far calling crpf was requested on 25 oct by wb govt…….but due to elections coming up in two states, crpf from far flung areas have to be called in…………now u will ask what police was doing y were they not sent………..coz media made wb police look as CPI-M workers…………
and as far as sez is consurned it was cancelled in march itself……….
I agree with the blogger on the few things. As far as the comment of naxalite is concrned, i would like to ask him if he justifies the killing?
The RED ARMY has conquered the Nandigram, wht will u say abt that?
They have decided not to discuss the issue in Parliament. Why?
killing is not justified but who is killing…..its not the govt its maoist……….who r doing so……………..they r opposing govt from entring the place……..get ur facts cleared that cpi m nd maoist r different …..bout come from mao style of thinking but r opposite……….nd u dont kiss a person if they fire at u………nd there is buzzzz that ppl in nadigram r not even indian they r bangladeshi……….
as far as parliament is consurned cpi m has agreed for a debate ……but under the constitution law is responsiblity of state so it as a law nd order issue cant be debated in parliament…………..but ya as sez issue or maoist issue it can…….i will also like to point out that guj riots were never debated as law nd order……..
U are wrong the killing was started by police forces there…….What will u say about the rape victim who was raped by cadres of CPM and have got no justice,,,,The police have also not taken any step to search for rape victim’s two missing daughters who she said were also gangraped and abducted by CPM cadres……The loot that followed there by cadres…..By the way who are CPM cadres to head the “OPERATION RECAPTURE”…….the Station Officer of Nandigram and the SP of Midnapore went on record to state that they were instructed not to interfere…………..the Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb goes on record to confirm that he did not want the state police to act……….the Chief Minister then goes on record to justify that the violence on women and children of Nandigram was “morally and “legally” justified…………The CPM may have got the formal language right, but can it seriously pass the test of the spirit that pervades India’s Constitution? Can it make a case based on constitutional morality for shielding from public view those who are guilty of rendering thousands homeless, and now huddled in relief camps?……….
I quote from “Waliulllah Ahmed Laskar”
“I myself have seen footage of Nandigram where a deadbody was being
packed in plastic rags. I also have seen unarmed innocent villagers
belonging to Bhumi Uchched Pratirod Committee demonstrating
peacefully and from bunkers earler used by Police incessant fire was
coming. People were being injured. People running away from their
kins and kiths. From their homes. There can not be seen a men in
uniform in Nandigram. The footage was aired by Star Ananda”
i agree that police fired but what will police do when ppl fir bow and arrow at u……….even police ppl have died………ok i assume that info provided by u is correct ……then what r Trinamool Congress ppl armed doing inside the village…………nd as u only mentioned that ppl r staying in relife camps then who r inside the village……point comes is y r they fighting when the govt has cancelled the sez in march itself nd said there will be land acquired………its jst a political game played by Trinamool Congress who has got frustated of not coming to power nd its not the first time that they r doing so…….also the point is they dont own the land, they jst farm on it………..but it does not justify taking there land…….nd as far as constitution goes as an indian we dont have rite to land…………any nd every land can be aquired by the govt when ever it wants………..as far as OPERATION RECAPTURE is consurned…………will u plz get me some details about “”Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee”" who r they nd were they armed or not???????????did they have the support from maoist or not????????as far i know they r armed, most of them dont belong to that area……..r memebers of Trinamool Congress or maoist………its not surprising that Trinamool Congress has got so frustated of staying out of power that they have started making alliance with baned outfits…..nd as ppl in uniform r concrned …if the r sent in then u say they kill ppl………nd if hey r not sent then u say ppl r being killed by others…….what can the govt do??????do u have option to give…..nd rishab did that body say to u that im a villager, or maoist or cpm……..Star Ananda must have great reporters which were able to cross the police blockade…where no other news channel cant reach…….if u can get me the video i will be very thankfull to u…..
The Chief Minister argued that organized resistance in Nandigram was not justified as his government had not yet made the final decision on land acquisition. Just because people took pre-emptive action, to defend their land from being seized, he claims it was just fine to have sent the police and his party goons to “restore order”.
As far as video thing is concerned u can contact the channel…….
Here is a chief minister who publicly says that he had greater faith in his party’s armed cadres than in the rule of law to resolve the Nandigram crisis……
“What he has said about the Bhoomi Uchchhed Pratirodh Committee’s tactics is not entirely untrue. There is no denying that the movement was not entirely peaceful or that several hundred CPM supporters were driven away from their homes.
But for a chief minister to publicly say that the agitators were “paid back in their own coin” is to endorse partisan warfare. That he still thinks and acts in terms of “our people, their people” shows that he wants to be the CPM’s, not Bengal’s, chief minister.
He has referred to the government’s peace initiatives over Nandigram during the past few months. Everyone knows that the efforts failed. Even two days before the CPM’s recapture of Nandigram, Jyoti Basu had talked of resuming political efforts for restoring peace at Nandigram………….
His argument that he did not use force at Nandigram in order to avoid a repeat of the tragedy of March 14 is just as flawed. What happened last week confirmed the suspicion that he had deliberately delayed seeking the help of central forces.
The way the CRPF men’s passage to Nandigram was blocked by the CPM supporters all along National Highway 41, while Nandigram was being recaptured, has come as irrefutable evidence of the plot.
The way he sought to defend the indefensible at his media conference is also remarkable for another reason. His answers show no remorse, no regrets for either the human tragedy at Nandigram or the collapse of the administration. Even after the protests and the political storm raging in the state, he seems to be as combative as his comrades at Nandigram.
His remarks against intellectuals protesting in Calcutta betrayed disdain and impatience that are typical of the arrogance of power….
[From The Telegraph]
As far as maoists link is concerned there have been reports but even then there is serious question as how maoists got into the action and there presence can cause more troubles but using arms will intensify the agitaion, we need to head towards a solution amicably…..
Yes the commies are hypocrites. Why haven’t they ever spoken a word against the barbaric terrorism comitted by the Naxalites. Obvoiusly they share the Marxist idelogy. Have you ever heard any one of the commies castigate China for its atrocities in Tibet?
CPM as whole and particularly in West Bengal is unable to import any new thought for people in its political agenda. its septurian/octogenerian leaders are suffering from senile disorder or irregular boul syndrom. NANDIGRAM is a result of peoples’ anger against CPM’s misrule bengal for last three decades. Although, it is also true that most viable future rulers TMC is do nothing more than CPM. TMC is now a bag full of frastated CPMs. West Bengal wants a third alternative under leadership of youths and majority is youth.
NAXAL MOVEMENT OF NAXALBARI HAS NO GOOD EFFECT ON THE SICIETY. IT HAS NOT CAUSED ANY BENEFIT TO THE PEOPLE. ONLY FEW POLICE OFFICERS GOT BENEFIT OF NAXAL MOVMENT. THEY SUPPRESSED THE MOVEMNT AND GOT PROMOTION.
LAND REFORM MOVEMNT CONDUCTED BY LF GOVT HAS CAUSED BENEFIT TO THE PEOPLE. BENGAL IS TOPPER IN RICE PRODUCTION. DURING PRAFULLA SEN TIME, BENGAL SUFFERED FROM FOOD SHORTAGE. TODAY WB POPULATION IS THREE TIMES MORE THAN THAT. STILL THERE IS NO FOOD CRISIS. CREDIT GOES TO LAND REFORM OF STATE GOVT, WHICH IS WELL WITHIN CONSTITUTION AND ORIGINAL CONGRESS PROMISE.
Terrific, this information is exactly what I was searching for.
The communist become the terrorist here in bengal. Only for that reason the people of bengal reject them. Well done Bengal. The Communist Party Of India (Marksist) now become “THE CURLPIT PARTY OF INDIA_ MAN-KILLING”
Well done Bengal People. Thanks for the change.
